The Women and Gender Studies program at Sweet Briar College developed out
of a commitment to the higher education of women. Women and Gender Studies
courses foster critical thinking, by utilizing gender as an analytical tool to
question and interpret knowledge, institutional structures, and cultures.
Students will discover how societies construct gender roles and how these roles
shape the larger cultural context. In the process, they will also learn the
diverse contributions of women throughout history.
The Women and Gender Studies program emphasizes the advantages of
individualized learning, with faculty guidance. Students undertake original
research, which often compliments their major field of concentration. In
addition, students participate in internships and design their own projects.
These projects have included inviting guest speakers to campus, developing
workshops, conducting interviews, and promoting positive social change.
Offering a minor in Women and Gender Studies, the program is
interdisciplinary and creates an environment conducive to innovative thinking
across the academic disciplines. The program helps students gain proficiency
in academic skills for the liberal arts and for success in their major field.
It is easy to declare the WMGS Minor. Just fill out this form and turn it in to the Registrar's Office on the third floor of Prothro.
